India's Wildlife
India's landscape, habitats and climate form one of the most bio-diverse regions. It supports 54 National Parks and 370 Wildlife Sanctuaries, many of which were former Maharajahs' hunting grounds.
Among the most well-known are Corbett, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Nagahole, and Gir (where the last of the Asian Lion still exist).
India has over 1200 species of bird, and is on main migratory routes, so it is a satisfyingly good country for bird-watchers, be you professional or keen amateur.
When viewing wildlife in India you need more patience than in Africa with its open savannahs, as much of the habitat is forest, where animals, such as the tiger, are elusive, and may be difficult to spot. Neither does it have the wide variety of species found in Africa. Although poaching and lack of organisation are detrimental factors, the country is becoming more aware of its wildlife heritage, and it is well worthwhile exploring a wildlife park or two, (maybe on elephant back).
