Indian Ocean Islands
If you like islands, there are plenty to choose from in the Indian Ocean, ranging from those comprising over a thousand tiny palm-fringed coral atolls to the substantial and isolated.
Some belong to mainland countries: Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia are described under Tanzania, Lamu, Funzi and Kiwayu belong to Kenya, whilst the Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelagos are part of Mozambique. Madagascar, the largest island in the Indian Ocean and fourth largest in the world, is a vast treasure chest of unique flora and fauna (including those entrancing lemurs), with an appealing coast and its own little islands such as Nosey Be.
It is however The Maldives, Mauritius and The Seychelles that are listed here separately under the Indian Ocean section of our website. Romantic, with lots of sunshine and a choice of different activities, they appeal to honeymooners, families and groups of friends, to those who enjoy island-hopping, diving and snorkelling, fishing, sailing or lazing the time away on a beach.
