Seldom does anyone realise how large (and long) Argentina is. It is the 8th largest country in the world, extending from desert and forest in the north through lake and pampas to glacier regions in the south.
Buenos Aires is passionate and lively, a melting pot of peoples from Europe and Latin America. West of the capital is the wide expanse of the Pampas, grasslands where you can experience the way of life on a ranch (estancia), and ride with gauchos rounding up cattle. The north-west is a desert of scrub and cactus.
Further west are the Andes, and in whose foothills are the vineyards, and, above Bariloche, the lake and ski region. To the south, Patagonia's desolate open steppes stretch down to the Strait of Magellan, and Tierra del Fuego, the island where the world's southern-most city is found, Ushuaia. In Patagonia are the wildlife reserve of the Valdes Peninsula, and the Parque Nacional de los Glaciares.
