The Okavango Delta, an oasis in the Kalahari Desert, is a haven for wildlife.
Within the 7,000 square miles of the Delta are a restricted number of exclusive tented camps and secluded lodges on the edge of lagoons, or tucked beside the waterways. There are large private concessions in the north of the country which are wonderfully remote while tented luxury mobile safaris are a splendid way to explore the country. Game-viewing activities are varied using open 4x4 vehicles, dug out canoes "mekoros", small motor boats, or on a walking safari. Exploring the Delta on a horse or by joining a celebrated elephant back safari are exciting ways to get close to the wildlife.
The Kalahari is a semi-arid desert and the most species rich in the world. In stark and rewarding contrast to the Delta, the Makgadikgadi Pans are the size of Switzerland and here you can quad bike in the dry season across the vast salt pans. In the rainy season there is an annual zebra and wildebeest migration and huge flocks of flamingo congregate in the shallow water.
