On a visit to Brazil, a few days in Rio de Janeiro will give you the best introduction to the country. The immense statue of Christ on Corcovado overlooks the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana and across this vibrant city, never more exhilarating than during its Carnival. In contrast, north of Rio are the unpopulated beaches of Natal province, un-frenetic and rich in marine life.
The country abounds with towns like Olinda in the north-east, where Portuguese colonial architecture has hardly been touched over centuries. Ouro Preto is the most extravagant example, and close to Rio on the coast is Parati where the architecture contrasts with the forest behind and the fishermens' simple way of life.
The best way to explore vast Amazon Basin the jungle is by riverboat, and there are all sorts and sizes. Manaus is the port at which to embark, for short or long journeys with a few nights on board.
The Iguassu Falls, over a mile across are spectacular and from here you can continue to the Panatanal, an expansive swamp region, reminiscent of the Okavango Delta, inhabited by a variety of wildlife, especially birds.
