Luxury Holidays in Chile

It does not take long to cross Chile, only 110 miles wide at its widest, but travelling its 2500 mile length is another matter.

Santiago, the capital, is the pivotal point, with the Andes rising behind it dominating the east of the country for most of its length. To the south-west of Santiago is the wine-growing district of Central Valley, further north-west lies Valparaiso, the port, and the nearby coastal resort of Vina del Mar. In the North is the Atacama Desert, the driest place on earth, arid and beautiful. Here ancient rock engravings are found, and across the Salar de Atacama, the great salt lake, is the Valle de la Luna.

In contrast is the Lake District in the mid-south main city Puerto Montt. This region of mountains, lakes, waterfalls and forest is for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits. The forested island of myths and legends, Chiloe lies offshore. Notable are its colourful villages, inhabited by friendly people, and its beaches.

Go south again and you come to Chilean Patagonia, wild, flat, desolate and inhospitable, and, magnificent. Glaciers run down to the ocean, and the forbidding peaks of Torres del Paine, the world biosphere reserve, tower over a series of lakes and rivers.

Islands do not come more remote than Easter Island - Rapa Nui is 2250 miles from Chile in the Pacific, a 5 hour flight, and the population of about 2,800 is mostly Polynesian. It is renowned for the monumental Moai, stone statues of heads and torsos some 30 ft high.
