A visit to Costa Rica is highly recommended for anyone interested in nature and wildlife. It is one of the most eco-conscious countries in the world. Over a quarter is given over to national parks or reserves, where more than 200 mammals, 850 species of birds and more butterflies than in the whole of Africa, thrive in their natural habitat.
One such park is Tortuguero. Here wildlife ranges from sea-turtles laying eggs on the beaches to tree iguanas, sloths and different monkeys in the canopy of the verdant jungle. You can spot them as you glide slowly by boat with a naturalist up the river's narrow waterways and channels.
Other parks include Corcovado on the Pacific and the fine Monteverde Cloud Forest where sky-trekking over the canopy is a great experience. The forest teems with birds and butterflies; there are over 400 bird species here alone.
Particularly memorable is Arenal Volcano, where at night, like a non-stop natural firework display, you see boulders of lava glowing red hot out of the cone and rolling down the sides.
The population is about 4 million, of mixed Latin American and Caribbean background. It is a small country; the size of Switzerland, so getting about is easy, even from the Caribbean to the Pacific.
