Luxury Holidays in Cuba
Cuba, the largest of the Caribbean islands, is in a time warp that is not going to last.
Havana is full of character. Jalopies that perhaps achieve 5 miles to the gallon, belch fumes, backfire, and make uneven progress down el Prado, the wide main avenue, passing Spanish colonial buildings with paint that has been peeling for a couple of decades and the fine 18th century opera house, which stages both ballet and opera.
The food is communistically bland, but there are some good restaurants, and a visit to a cigar factory is an education.
Touring is easy, mostly on good roads without sign posts, to Vinales the tobacco growing region, and across to Trinidad, where there is a good choice of jazz clubs. On the south coast there is good snorkelling and diving, with the opportunity of hiring a yacht and sailing to excellent fishing grounds for Bone Fish, Tarpon, Trevalley, Sailfish and Marlin.
Cuba has some beautiful beaches, and the standard of places to stay, (at the moment often large, without character, and offering bland food), is gradually changing for the better.
If you want a glimpse of life as it was in the 1950s, where almost the only difference is the effect of time, go now.
