Luxury Holidays in Ecuador
In this country, divided by the Equator (hence its name) you can happily spend two to three weeks of discovery. Travelling by train, (even on the roof of a steam train for a bit if you choose) is a great way to see the country.
Two cordilleras (ranges) of the Andes run north to south and Quito, the capital, sits in the central valley facing the active Pinchincha Volcano. This central valley forms the "Valley of the Volcanoes", and includes Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world.
Ecuador has many national parks and reserves. Notable are Machalilla on the coast with Isla del Plata and its pre-Columbian ruins, Sangay with its rare species, and Pasochoa and Podocarpus for flora.
The country is renowned for its colourful markets, and many such as Otavalo are within reach of Quito in the Central Valley, at whose southern end is Cuenca, an Inca site, with later pink marble colonial buildings. From here, don't miss the Incas' Ingapirca.
