Luxury Safaris in Gabon

Neighbouring Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon attained independence from France in 1960.

Having enjoyed substantial wealth through its oil reserves (Libreville has the highest per capita consumption of champagne in the world!) President Omar Bongo, with half an eye on diminishing natural resources and realising the potential Gabon held as a tourist destination (through the World Conservation Society), created thirteen new National Parks, covering 11% of the country and which forms the largest area of protected area in the world.

Gabon safaris and her wildlife are remarkable. How often would you ever have the chance to watch lowland gorilla, mandrill, chimpanzee and red river hog on land, to whales, turtles and hippos surfing the Atlantic? Sightings are not guaranteed but are highly rewarding. A trip to Gabon is an expedition rather than a holiday and although Loango Lodge is comfortable, the bush camps are rustic, and the itinerary may not go according to plan. Transport may be delayed or changed and as tourism is in its infancy, and the infrastructure fragile, it is not a destination for those visiting Africa for the first time.

However for the well-travelled, the adventurous, and for those seeking something different Gabon (including the islands of São Tomé and Principe) has a great deal of potential, and is well worth exploring for its raw and untouched wilderness.
