Luxury Safaris in The Indian Himalayas
The foothills of the Himalayas are ideal for those who enjoy treks, gentle or robust, of varying length but always surrounded by incredible views and a way of life that hasn't changed for centuries. Wonderful to visit between September to May and the three months from March to May are particularly glorious when the hills are covered in wildflowers.
These may be on foot or by horse, going from village to village with the snowclad backdrop of the majestic Himalayan range all the while and disarmingly friendly people wherever you go. Among these enchanting routes are those easily accessible from hill stations such as Shimla and making a perfect antidote to the hubbub of Rajasthan and Delhi.
Over in the east around Darjeeling you can stay in a lodge on a tea estate with a river running below, see rhododendrons bursting with flower, and continue into Sikkim for a few days walking, or maybe venture further into this beautiful state, still a veritable Shangri-La.
From June you can still venture into the far north of India, far from the monsoon that drenches the rest of India for a couple of months. At over 3,500 metres on the high plateau, Ladakh is often referred to as a 'little Tibet' as it is geographically, anthropologically and culturally part of Tibet. Ladakh comprises 45,000 square kilometres of high altitude desert that is dominated by rugged snow capped mountains and deep turquoise lakes. This starkly beautiful land is traversed by fast flowing rivers often with strands of green, running oasis-like along side and here, between June and October, you can experience the life of unspoilt villages in the Indus Valley.
