Luxury Safaris in Libya

Stretching from deepest desert in the south to the Mediterranean in the north, Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa.

Tides of empires have ebbed and flowed across it - Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and latterly, but briefly, Italian. They have all left their mark and ancient ruins along the length of the fertile coastal region that extends from Tunisia to Egypt.

The most impressive highlight is Leptis Magna, one of the finest Roman coastal cities, (with a population 65,000 people at its height) but it is by no means the only attraction. In Tripoli, ancient Oea, is the triumphal arch of Marcus Aurelius, an excellent museum, and vibrant souk.

West of Tripoli is Sabratha, whose Roman theatre retains its magnificence, despite the ravages of earthquakes and Vandals, while east across the bay in Cyrenaica are the vestiges of the Greek empire, abundant with wild flowers in spring.

There is plenty of opportunity to experience the desert, from the ancient caravan town of Ghadames in the west, down to Ghat, the basalt mountains of the Jebel Acacus and the remoteness of the sand seas.

"What a brilliant trip - The archaeological sites were fascinating and beyond all of my expectations, the Festival was fun and, for me, musically most interesting. Our group had excellent weather and of all my many African trips, the group was by far the best." - Chris Lerwill
