Mali is not a conventional holiday destination but a journey for those with an adventurous spirit.

Accommodation is simple and roads are often poor but this is more than made up for by the wealth of experiences to be had here. East of Bamako, the capital, is Djenne and its mosque, the largest mud structure in the world. Timbuctoo, where the great Saharan salt caravans still arrive, is a day's journey away.

Beyond Dogon country and the sand strewn streets of Gao lies the Sahara proper and Tuareg territory. The Tuareg are the nobles of the desert and nights under the stars coupled with Tuareg hospitality and the silence and romance of the desert is unforgettable.
