Luxury Holidays in Mexico
You need time to explore Mexico's geographical and cultural diversity.
The country stretches from the United States south to Guatemala and Belize, and from the Caribbean to the Pacific. There are a wide mix of peoples, and a pre-Columbian history tracing back to the Aztec Empire.
Modern Mexico City, largest city in the world, was founded on the old Aztec centre, and has fine museums. Nearby is the highly important Teotihuacan. This 'City of the Gods' covers 34 sq km, with the striking Pyramid of The Sun, the lesser Pyramid of the Moon, the Grand Avenue of the Dead, and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.
Strong indigenous cultures survive around Oaxaca and San Christobal de las Casas south of Mexico City, where local textiles and handicrafts abound.
North are the central highlands, where the best examples of Spanish colonial towns are found. By Angangero, a village near Morelia, is the butterfly sanctuary where Monarch butterflies in their millions arrive to over winter at the end of their migration from Canada.
Mayan sites are found throughout the Yucatan Peninsula - (but avoid time in Cancun). Merida, the capital, is on the Mayan site of Tihoo, and notable are Chichen Itza and Uxmal.
After experiencing some of the above, relax on the Pacific, and perhaps visit the marine reserve of The Sea of Cortez to see the grey and humpback whales (January to March), dolphins, and turtles.
"We very much enjoyed our visit to Mexico... The sandy beach at Tulum was the best we have ever experienced." - Mr & Mrs Chris Dumbell
