Luxury Safaris in Niger
"Niger offers an escape into a world so other, so extravagantly beautiful, so wild and desolate, that it almost stops the heart when one first gazes upon it." - Financial Times
The region of most interest to the traveller is north of Agadez, an ancient Saharan trading city town on the intersection of the great caravan routes. Setting out in a small convoy with a Tuareg guide, cook and driver you first arrive at Dabous, and find an 18 foot ancient rock carving of a giraffe, around 6,000 years old. Driving on into the Air Plateau, there are representational and symbolic engravings amongst the rock formations.
East are the sand seas of the Tenere Desert, perhaps the most magnificently desolate landscape on earth, but on the route back towards Agadez, Timia appears quite unexpectedly, an oasis deep in a valley, that has supported over 5,000 people for centuries, and here gardens flourish under palm trees.
A visit to Niger is an adventure to inaccessible regions where the way of life differs greatly to our own.
"A fascinating trip to one of the poorest parts of one of the poorest countries; with an unusual breadth and balance of geography, geology, history and modernity, art and artifacts and with a friendly welcome to us from all we met." - David Lyon
