Luxury Safaris in Northern India
The classic tour of Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, known as the golden triangle, introduces you to some of India's greatest sights and sites. Further days in southern Rajasthan are an easy extension.
A day or so in the teeming city of Delhi allows get the feel of India and its people, before setting out to Agra and the Taj Mahal, Fatepur Sikri and the bird sanctuary of Keolado by Bharatpur.
In the pink city of Jaipur, capital of the state, Rajasthan comes into its own with a wealth of history, fabled palaces and temples; here you wander through the bazaars coloured with textiles, clothes, shawls, shoes, jewellery, and almost everything imaginable.
Rajasthan cities are identified by colour - Jaipur, with its pink sandstone palaces; Jodhpur, its great fort commanding a view of the sea of blue roofs hundreds of feet below, and Udaipur, the most romantic, with its pure white Lake Palace.
Rajasthan is strewn with temples and hilltop forts, the largest is Chittorgarh, and on your travels it is worth staying in at least one converted fort in the countryside to enjoy the scene and pace of rural life which continues as it has for centuries.
The refreshingly little known state of Gujarat, south-west of Rajasthan, is the last refuge of the Asian Lion, and, in Kutch, of the Wild Ass. Flamingo breed here too.
Some of India's finest textiles are woven in its tribal villages, so it's worth a visit just for these. There are hilltop temples with spectacular views, and palaces, and festivals, (of course), while along its coast are little places to spend a few days doing nothing.
"Thank you again for all the guidance and hard work you put into making our trip seamless and exquisite, we've had a thoroughly life changing holiday and so much of that is thanks to you." - Erzsi Cantacuzene
