Luxury Holidays in Peru

In this one country are the Andes, the Amazon, Lake Titicaca, Chachapoyas, and Machu Picchu.

On the coast, Lima, the capital, has interesting architecture, museums, and colourful markets. Nearby is the archaeological site of Pichimachay Cave, a good introduction to the country, rich in ancient cultures and ruins.

The Nazca Lines, etched into the desert thousands of years ago, are south of Lima and further south still are the Colca Canyon, twice the depth of the Grand Canyon, and the city of Arequipa, vividly white against El Misti volcano.

Over half the country, to the north and east, is rainforest, including Manu Biosphere Reserve, the largest conservation area in the world, with a wide variety of wildlife.

Cuzco, centre of Inca civilisation, is overlooked by the great ruins of Sacsayhuaman, where the Inca winter festival is held. To the west is Machu Picchu, Lost City of the Incas, which was never found by the Conquistadores and accessible by train up the Sacred Valley, or on foot along the Inca Trail.

Trains are a popular method of travel, and one great journey is from Cuzco through the Altiplano (high plains) to Lake Titicaca, where Uros Indians live on floating islands.
