Luxury Safaris in Rwanda

"The boss - a giant silver back, at least three times my weight, looks me dead in the eye. I do not breathe." - The Independent Traveller

The Rwandans have put civil war and genocide behind them and, united as a nation, they are keen to show visitors the beauty of their tiny landlocked country.

Although a little smaller than Lake Victoria, Rwanda has the largest remaining single tract of montane forest in East and Central Africa and three national parks, Akagera, Nyungwe and the Parc National des Volcans. The last is home to the mountain gorillas. With their very existence under threat, it is one of the greatest privileges in the natural world to visit them in the vast volcanic Virunga conservation area that stretches into Uganda and The Congo. It is worth taking the trouble to get fit so you can trek in sometimes muddy conditions without punishing yourself, up over 7,500 ft to find the gorillas.

The legacy of the genocide is not ignored and those who wish to understand Rwanda's troubles and suffering can visit the memorials, a moving and humbling experience.

"A huge thank you - brilliant organisation - a big adventure." - Laura Bailey
