Luxury Holidays in Uruguay

Uruguay is for those who enjoy nature, the beach and local traditions. Its simple attractions and close proximity to Buenos Aires also make it an ideal country for a short visit after a stay in Argentina.

Here are the beaches that Argentina lacks, and a reputation for fine food and the pleasures of rural life. Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, was laid out by the Portuguese but built by the Spanish. Modern day Montevideo reflects Spanish, Italian and French influence, with a dash of Art Deco architecture thrown in. It is a relaxed and easy-going city with nine sandy beaches along the front.

To the east of the capital are beaches and small bays, and round the resort town of Punta del Este is the opportunity for water-sports, fishing and sailing. Inland the country is given over to estancias, vineyards and citrus groves. In its position at the mouth of the River Plate, Uruguay was important to the Spanish and Portuguese, and Colonia del Sacramento (a World Heritage Site) exhibits fine colonial architecture in its buildings and narrow streets.

A riding trip, appealing to keen riders in particular, that starts in the hills and takes in a combination of well preserved old estancias with breathtaking scenery, arriving finally at the coast, with rides along the beaches is a perfect way to explore the country.
